The Basic Types of Racking Systems

One of the most crucial things when crafting a warehouse is choosing a storage system. This is where the most expenses go. There is a need to create a supportive storage system considering that warehouses are all about proper storage of items. The storage system chosen is based on the layout of the warehouse, the floor plan, and other processes. There are different types of warehouse storage systems available today. These systems support the processes, and a warehouse must be well acquainted with the options available. Basically, a racking system is used to store items like pallet loads, cartons, and other large items. The following are the basic types of racking systems.

Selective Racking

Selective racking system Malaysia is a simple racking system that allows only a single pallet load. This racking system is simple since it allows the pallets to be accessible from the aisle. Since they can occupy a lot of space, warehouses choose double-deep racks to ensure they can accommodate more than one pallet. The system is the most popular because it is inexpensive and comes in various accessories and sizes. For items that require immediate and quick access, this is the right system to choose.

Static Racking

Static racks are immobile. That means they stay in one position. Mostly, these racks are used for storing lightweight items. Since forklifts cannot access items from these racks, only the items that can be hand-picked and organized are stored on static racks.

Mobile Racking

This is the opposite of static racks. Mobile racks can be adjusted in position even though they store the same items as static shelves. The great thing about mobile racks is that they can store more items. The shelves are fitted on rail systems so that there is no need for aisles. Some of these mobile racks come with a lock solution to limit access to the items stored. This racking system is ideal for products that move slow.

Drive-In Racking

This system is ideal for keeping mostly repetitive items. It applies in the first-in, last-out system, and a forklift can access them by driving on the side to deliver or pick items. The pallets on a drive-in rack are placed on a continuous rail. There is no need for aisles with a drive-in system, and the system is perfect for keeping a large number of items when the space is limited.

Carton-Flow Rack

For a carton-flow rack, the use of wheels or rollers allows the moving of items from the back to the front. Mostly, these racks are used to store small items. When using a system of first-in, first-out, this is the best rack system to choose.

The following are important things to consider when choosing a racking system.

  • Budget
  • Amount of storage space
  • Forklift accessibility
  • Flexibility
  • Floor utilization
  •

Conclusion

Selecting the right system depending on operations in the warehouse can greatly impact how business is conducted. The rack system chosen will facilitate efficiency, safety, and organization. Therefore, there is the need to select the right system. Above are the common types of racking systems.
